Convert between mesh, wire opening and wire diameter, with the visual guide, weave options, alloy descriptions and full conversion chart.
Enter any one value for a chart estimate, or any two (e.g. mesh + wire) for an exact result. Switch units per field.
Bold = readily available / commonly stocked (light = mill grade, more open area; standard = market grade, general-purpose); non-bold = reasonable assumption.
| Mesh | Wire duty | Opening (µm) | Opening (mm) | Opening (inch) | Wire Ø (mm) | Open area (%) |
|---|
Openings and open area vary with the real wire diameter; confirm the exact spec with a GQI specialist.

Mesh count = 25.4 mm ÷ (w + d)
Open area A0 = (w ÷ (w + d))2 × 100%
w = wire opening (aperture); d = wire diameter.
A sieve number is a designation, not a wire count. ASTM E11 / ISO 3310-1 numbers are legacy names for a standard opening size, so the mesh equation this calculator uses does not apply to thema 12 sieve is not woven twelve wires to the inch. Read a sieve call-out here as an opening, then specify the screen cloth from the conversion chart above.
| Sieve No. | Opening (µm) | Opening (mm) | Opening (inch) | Nominal wire Ø (mm) |
|---|
Openings per ASTM E11. Wire diameters are the nominal sieve-cloth wires, carried for identification only: they are not a weave specification and feed no calculation on this page.
